Review and Revision
1. Review a paragraph you wrote during an
earlier class period, analyze it by doing the following.
- List and briefly describe or state
the strengths of the paragraph by category: e.g., well-narrowed topic
sentence, clear development, specific examples or details.
- List any structural problems you
find in the paragraph, also by categories: e.g., lack of well-narrowed
topic sentence, unclear development, lack of specific examples or details.
- List examples of other kinds of
errors you made in the paragraph, again, by categories: e.g., sentence
faults (SF, CS, FS), missing commas (to indicate pauses), verb forms
("had sign" for "had signed," etc.), misspellings
("there" for "their," "wont" for
"want," etc.), disagreement of subject and verb, disagreement of
pronoun and antecedent, and so on.
2. Revise the paragraph fully, paying
particular attention to structural problems and other kinds of errors. Be
especially careful to insure that there is adequate, specific development in the
form of relevant examples or details. Try reviewing the principles of paragraph
construction.
3. Proofread the paragraph carefully,
making further corrections or improvements as necessary.
