Prewriting

1. First of all, set up your page in conventional format, with your last name and automatic page numbering in a header, and information about yourself and the course in the upper left corner, double spaced:

                                                                                                                                                                            [Last name] 1

        [Your name]

        Prof. [or Dr.] Kinnamon

        English 101.4

        [Date: e.g., 24 Aug. 2007]

2. This is an exercise in a particular kind of prewriting called "free writing." When directed to do so, start writing (single spacing is okay for prewriting, but not for formal paragraphs). Choose any topic that pops into your head. If you can't think of anything at all, try focusing on the weather, your immediate surroundings, tasks that need to be completed, your favorite sport, etc.

3. Whatever you do, keep writing until directed to stop. If you experience writer's block, try repeating what you have just written until you think of something else. In any case, it is especially important to keep the writing flowing until you are directed to stop. Save as Prewriting1.
