Free Writing Exercise

 

Write until directed to stop on one of the following topics. Do not stop to check spelling, punctuation, etc. Also keep writing. If you run out of something to say, repeat the preceding sentence, comment on the weather, etc.

 

  1. Write about a time when you or someone you know reacted to someone else based on some preconception about him or her, about how his or her possible response to you, etc. Set up the incident (where, when, etc.), explain what happened and what the outcome was, etc. Was the result upsetting, funny, etc.?

     
  2. Write about a time when you or someone you know misjudged someone else based on what he or she looked like, his or her background, etc. Set up the incident (where, when, etc.), explain what happened and what the outcome was, etc. Was the result upsetting, funny, etc.?

 

  1. Write about an incident in a book, movie, or television program in which someone reacted to or misjudged someone else based on that person’s appearance, background, etc. Be specific, thorough, and detailed.
