REL 203: Jesus

Reading Assignment: Read "Q"

During one week of the class, we attempt to follow along the material in Luke and Matthew which many scholars assume belonged to Q — the so-called "Synoptic Sayings Source."

By definition, if linguistically parallel material can be found in both Matthew and Luke, but not in Mark, that material is hypothesized to be from "Q."

When we read, we follow the order of Luke. Most scholars maintain that Luke hewed closest to the original order of Q when composing his Gospel, whereas Matthew reordered material by grouping things together in categories.

In the table at left, the passages are listed for Matthew and Luke by chapter and verse, and section numbers are given for Burton Throckmorton's Gospel Parallels.
