Course Description
The class called Jesus at Mars Hill College pursues a critical academic inquiry into "Jesus." We investigate the figure "Jesus" as he is represented in gospel, scripture, theological and critical writings, art and iconography, literature, film, television, the internet, etc. Our aim is to understand and critically evaluate how these representations of "Jesus" have influenced global religion, history and culture. The topics we study may include the following:
- "Jesus," or the representation of Jesus;
- ancient sources about Jesus;
- ancient Christian conceptions of Jesus;
- Christology and creed in the early church;
- Jesus in the history of Art;
- Albert Schweitzer's Quest of the Historical Jesus;
- The problem of the Historical Jesus today;
- reading “Q”;
- reading Mark and the Redaction of Mark in Matthew and Luke;
- reading the Infancy Narratives;
- reading the Passion Narratives;
- reading the Gospel of Thomas;
- reading Special Matt, Special Luke, and John;
- Jesus in Contemporary Culture, Politics, and Literature.
This course is a great follow up to REL 112, but has no prerequisites. Normally offered every other Fall.
