LAA 111: World Mythology (Challenges)

Course Description

Challenges from World Mythology is the name of professor Matthew Baldwin's section of the Mars Hill College Freshman seminar, LAA 111: Challenges. At Mars Hill College, the required Freshman seminar core classes called "Challenges" aim to introduce students to college-level academics and to orient students to life on the campus of MHC.

Besides introducing students to life "on the Hill", this section of Challenges focuses on the academic topic of "World Mythology." Our aim is to develop skills at reading and interpreting mythic texts from around the world. We use historical, geographical, literary, philosophical, and other critical methods to help us understand how humans find and make meaning in myth.

Prerequisite: this course is open ONLY to first semester Freshmen and to first semester new transfer students with less than 14 credits of college-level work. It is offered every Fall.

Detail from the 2nd century B.C.E. "Great Altar of Zeus," which was located in Pergamum (or Pergamon) in Asia Minor (modern day Bergama in Turkey). The sculptures in this frieze depict the mythical war between the Olympian gods and the Titans, which is also known as the Gigantomachy. The Altar is now in the Pergamon museum in Berlin, Germany.
