html0a.gif (339 bytes) Kinnamon: Interests in Technology and Instruction

Over the past year or so, I have become particularly interested in the possibilities of using technology in my teaching. Along with my colleagues, I have attended conferences and workshops in computer-assisted instruction in writing, and I have begun to teach myself the basics of Web-site construction.

I recently taught an experimental section of English 111, "The Expository Essay," in which my students used computers, not just for composing papers, but also for collaborative writing and revising, for email conversations, and for research in electronic catalogues and indexes and in the vast resources of the Internet. We also gained experience in "real world" writing by preparing informational and promotional materials for the Continuing Education Program at the college. Recently I created Web-based versions of English 111 and English 112 primarily for the use of students enrolled in a distance learning program.

I also require students in some of my courses to create Web pages for class projects. Some examples are pages based on Shakespeare's Macbeth and The Taming of the Shrew, on Shakespeare's Hamlet and James Joyce's Ulysses, and on Christina Rossetti, a nineteenth-century English poet.
